What To Do When You Spot A Pipe Leaking In The Wall.

 In GateKBlog

What do you do when you spot a pipe leaking in the wall? We have it explained here. Dive in as soon as possible. It’s always fun to learn!

You may have a pipe leaking when you notice water in weird places at home. If you need to fix it, you should know the cause at least. These are several reasons why your pipes are leaking;

1. Broken Trap Seal

A trap seal is a plumbing term where water is used to seal a pipe and aid the movement of water. Traps are found in nearly every building with internal plumbing. There is the U-shaped trap seal and the P-shaped trap seal.

2. High Water Pressure

It’s great when the water flows out with force and hits a good spot, especially during a shower, but it is not the best when it is one of the causes of pipe leakage. There’s just so much your pipes can handle. Don’t put your pipes under unnecessary pressure.

3. Pipe Corrosion

Pipe corrosion is when piping materials break down because of their environment. You can also call it “pipe rusting.” This problem most times is considered small, but it becomes big because it doesn’t only affect your water but also your health. Call a professional to handle it for you.

Other causes are broken pipe joints, clogged water lines, rapid temperature changes, etc.

WHAT TO DO?

Now that you have identified the causes of the pipe leaking in the wall, what can you do?

  • Don’t Panic

There is nothing you can do by panicking. Just identify where the pipe is leaking. You can identify a leak with these:

  1. Wet or discolored drywall
  2. Water stained trim
  3. Damp masonry
  4. Musty smells
  5. Mold or mildew
  6. Puddles on the floor near the wall or drips from the ceiling

  • Potential Sources

Once you have identified your pipe is leaking,  you will need to find out the source. It’s important to know that the source might not be where the leak is.

  1. Firstly, write down the number on the water meter.
  2. Secondly, turn off all faucets and appliances that use water in your home to know if it is coming from the interior plumbing.
  3. Thirdly, wait at least three hours and check the water meter again. If the amount of water used increases, then you still have to figure out where it is coming from.
  • Call a professional

WHAT TO AVOID

Home maintenance is necessary and should be timely to avoid pipe leaking in the wall.

  1. Use Pex Piping where possible. It’s better to use PEX than PVC.
  2. Pay attention to the drainage patterns around the house.
  3. Insulate pipes on the exterior walls in a climate where they might freeze
  4. Keep your water pressure between 40 – 60 PSI.
